~Father Joseph Kentenich
As a movement of moral and religious renewal in the Catholic Church Schoenstatt works to help renew the Church and society in the spirit of the Gospel. It seeks to reconnect faith with daily life, especially through a deep love of Mary, the Mother of God.
Father Joseph Kentenich, the founder of Schoenstatt, a gifted teacher and educator, taught at the Pallotine House of Studies in Schoenstatt, Vallendar. Through an extraordinary bond of trust that developed between Father Kentenich and his students, the first covenant of love was made. This was the beginning and the lasting foundation of the worldwide development of the Schoenstatt movement. Throughout his life as founder, Father Kentenich gave his followers a deep experience of God's fatherhood and led them into his own profound love for the Church.
The message of the covenant of love proclaims that God expresses his love in speciific relationships which open to us his saving power. Salvation history provides many examples of these covenants. This covenant reality has taken an original form in Schoenstatt through the covenant of love with Mary, giving a vibrant expression, safeguard, and means to cultivate the covenant of love with God.
The message of practical faith in Divine Providence proclaims a faith in God and his loving care that has been made part of practical everyday life. In Schoenstatt it has the form of a message of trust in God's care, of a constant dialogue with the God of life and history, of actively seeking God's will and acting accordingly.
As a place of grace Schoenstatt has touched the lives of many people. The Schoenstatt Shrine is the movement's spiritual home and center of life. The shrine is dedicated to Mary as the Mother Thrice Admirable, Queen, and Victress of Schoenstatt (Mother of God, Mother of the Redeemer, and Mother of the Redeemed (us).1 Yearly thousands of pilgrims visit the shrine. They come with open and believing hearts to receive the special graces which the Mother Thrice Admirable, intercedes for them:
The grace of FINDING A HOME: In the holy shelter of the shrine we can escape from the anxious restlessness of the present age and attach ourselves to a place where we feel loved and accepted. The Blessed Mother offers us a home in her heart. We become more truly citizens of heaven, children of God and members of his family on earth.
The grace of INNER TRANSFORMATION: In the shrine Our Lady works as mother and educator. She guides our decision-making and keeps us faithful to what we have promised. She leads us into true inner freedom, heals our hearts, fills us with faith and hope, and strengthens us. Above all, she teaches us true love and childlikeness before the Father.
The grace of APOSTOLIC FRUITFULNESS: From the shrine, Our Lady sends us as Marian apostles to bring Christ anew to the world. She brought us the Redeemer and she allows us to share in her mission, bringing Christ to others, and leading many souls home to God's fatherly heart.
Schoenstatt's way of life helps us to live in accordance with the calling to holiness that is essential to the Christian life. Through Schoenstatt shrines and spiritual centers, countless people have received inspiration, formation, and an experience of the Church as a true family of God. Schoenstatt provides a strong network of support and spiritual nourishment for Catholic families and individuals striving to place their faith at the center of daily life.
